To improve performance in After Effects you should move your disk cache off of your system drive. In Preferences Media & Disk Cache Disk Cache, change this from the default to a fast drive (SSD if possible). Here is a handy link to Adobe’s white paper on Hardware Performance for more tips.

After Effects Disk Cache Warning
Open the After Effects project. When it’s done, you will see a warning that your disk cache folder is on a drive that does not have enough available space to safely store the full amount of data specified in your preferences.
Click “OK” button and open the project. In the next step go to the main menu and press “Edit”, then select “Preferences”, and choose the “Media&Disk Cache” option from the submenu.
In the pop-up window, press the “Empty Disk Cache” button in the “Disk Cache” section.
After Effects Cache Location
Click “OK” button in the appeared window. Click on the “OK” button inside the Preference Window. The After Effects disk cache is now cleared.
